Match brightness first
Check whether the subject is visible before brightening every dark scene. Also watch for detail disappearing in areas that are already bright.
Compare different scenes
Lighting can change the color even within one location. Alternate between adjacent clips to compare skin tones and background brightness.
Treat a filter as a starting point
Apply a filter you like, then adjust its intensity and correction values. The same settings will not suit every source clip.
Watch the whole thing at the end
A scene can look beautiful on its own and still feel out of place in the finished video. Play the full sequence to see whether the atmosphere stays consistent.
